Bob and Harvey Weinstein’s newly minted TWC-Dimension label has snatched up another project. The company will team up with Endgame to produce the action comedy Murder Mystery, with The Proposal director Anne Fletcher signing on to take the helm. Written by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, White House Down), the film revolves around a married couple that takes a long-delayed honeymoon in the hopes of saving their marriage. When one of their fellow cruise ship passengers turns up dead, the two set out across Europe to track down the murderer and maybe salvage their relationship in the process. Both Kevin Macdonald (State of Play) and John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) were at different points attached to direct Murder Mystery, and Charlize Theron was initially poised to star in Madden’s iteration. Obviously those directors fell off, but Theron is still involved as a producer. Fletcher most recently helmed The Guilt Trip. Hit the jump to read the press release. While there are plenty of exciting films opening over the next few months, one highly anticipated pic that’s already in the can is conspicuously absent. After years of starts and stops—including a massive yearlong postponement due to torrential rains in the planned filming location—director George Miller’s long-promised Mad Max: Fury Road finally underwent principal photography in the summer of 2012. However, in the ensuing time we have yet to see even an official image from the pic. While some were hopeful that Miller would complete Fury Road in time to make a surprise late 2013 release, it became clear that that would not be the case. Now we may have a bit of a reason for the delay, as Miller is poised to go back and do three weeks of additional shooting on the pic with his main cast. Hit the jump for more. Despite Miller’s initial shoot lasting six months, Inside Film (via The Playlist) reports that Mad Max: Fury Road is now scheduled for three weeks of additional shooting in Australia later this year. The film’s cast, which includes Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, and Zoe Kravitz, is expected to be returning for the reshoots, so one imagines a significant portion of the film is being reworked. This is slightly disconcerting given that Miller had plenty of time to prep and plan Fury Road over the past few years, but hopefully the additional shooting will be for the better. There is still no official release date for the film, but if ...
Filming has commenced on the adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel Dark Places. Written and directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key), the film stars Charlize Theron as a woman who, at the age of 7, survives the massacre of her family and testifies against her brother as the murderer. Years later, when confronted by a group obsessed with solving notorious crimes, Theron’s character is forced to confront the truth about what she saw—or didn’t see. The film is told in a series of flashbacks and features an impressive cast that includes Chloe Grace Moretz, Nicholas Hoult, Christina Hendricks, Corey Stoll (House of Cards) and Mud breakout Tye Sheridan. In addition to the announcement that filming is underway in Shreveport, Louisiana, it was announced that Sterling Jerins (World War Z) and Shannon Kook (The Conjuring) have joined the cast in supporting roles, with Jerins playing the younger version of Theron’s character. One of the biggest surprise hits of this year was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, about seven cash-strapped seniors who decide to retire to a resort in far-off India, where they find friendship and romance in the most unexpected ways. In fact, the film did so well at the box office, that there have been recent talks about developing a possible sequel. From director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) and screenwriter Ol Parker, the film stars Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson and Dev Patel. With awards season gearing up, and Fox Searchlight hoping for something in one of the major categories, director John Madden spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about how it felt to have the feel do so well at the box office, how slow the industry has been to notice that older audiences are viable, whether or not a sequel could really happen and if he’d want to be involved, and what all of the awards season hoopla is like for him. He also talked about how excited he is that Showtime has ordered Masters of Sex to series (he directed the pilot) and that he hopes to stay involved, and that Murder Mystery, with Charlize Theron in the lead role, will be his next film, once he finishes casting. Check out what he had to say after the jump. Obviously, the goal of every filmmaker is to have their movie seen by as many people as possible, but how did it feel to find ...
Charlize Theron and producer Basil Iwanyk (The Town) have optioned the Vanity Fair article "Marie Colvin's Private War." The article by Marie Brenner tells the story of determined war journalist Marie Colvin, who got herself smuggled into Syria last winter to cover the civil war. Colvin and photographer Rémi Ochlik were killed by an improvised explosive device while fleeing an unofficial media building that the Syrian army bombed. The project is viewed as a possible starring vehicle for Theron, but as of this writing she is only confirmed as a producer. The producing team is currently on the search for a writer to adapt Brenner's article. Hit the jump for more background on Colvin. THR provides a concise bio in their report on the option: Colvin died in February while covering the civil war in Syria. She was an American journalist who wrote for the British paper The Sunday Times, covering wars and conflicts from Kosovo and Chechnya to East Timor and Sri Lanka -- where she lost an eye. Colvin specialized in Middle East affairs and was covering the Syrian uprising in a building that was being shelled by the Syrian Army when she died at age 56. Colvin was known for her brash style and fought to bring attention to the inhuman and blood-spilling scenes she was seeing. She also endured three divorces and post-traumatic stress disorder. You can read the source article at Vanity Fair. This is not Brenner's first piece to inspire a film; Michael Mann and Eric Roth adapted her article "The Man ...
